Rebecca Ward was born in New Zealand and is a Maleny-based artist with a contemporary approach to jewellery. Through the use of both traditional and contemporary materials and techniques her jewellery works arrest the viewer with a combination of serene beauty and wry insight.
Since 1993 Rebecca has exhibited in Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, London and Singapore. Her work is influenced by NZ adornment and her interest in visionary and speculative writing. She was granted a Craft Qld (VACF Australia Council/Arts Qld) Mentorship Grant 2001; and also an Arts Qld Grant for a NZ Jewellery Residency in Dunedin. In 2009 she was awarded a $40 000 Arts QLD grant with Shannon Garson, ceramicist to undertake Swamp Cartography, a project documenting the Wallum areas of SE Queensland.
Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in Gold & Silversmithing in 1993. Rebecca was one of the three founding members of MoB Workspace in the Museum of Brisbane at the Brisbane City Hall where she was a resident 2003-2007. Rebecca also runs workshops and is a silversmithing tutor at Brisbane Institute of Art. Her work is becoming recognized as significant in Queensland's creative visual arts community.
